Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine

Expert Care to Help Your Body Heal

While most of us take our body’s ability to heal for granted, it is, in fact, a complex process. Each year, chronic wounds caused by diabetes, poor circulation, or other conditions prevent millions of Americans from enjoying life. St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital’s Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine, located at the Cornwall campus, provides the expert help people need to help the body heal.

Dedicated to caring for people with chronic, non-healing wounds, our multi-disciplinary team of physicians, nurses, and wound care specialists use proven wound care practices, along with advanced clinical treatment, and state-of-the-art technology, including Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. They work closely with primary care physicians to develop a specific treatment plan to best meet a patient’s healing needs.

Traditional wound care may be used for the care of:

  • Diabetic wounds
  • Wounds resulting from poor blood flow
  • Traumatic wounds
  • Burns
  • Skin grafting

Treatment and intervention may include:

  • Advanced wound dressings
  • Growth factors
  • Antibiotic therapy
  • Conventional wound dressing
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Education and prevention
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a medical treatment that enhances the body’s natural healing and immune system by providing additional oxygen to the body’s tissues. The increased oxygen, delivered under pressure in state-of-the-art hyperbaric chambers, furthers the body’s ability to kill germs and increase healing. Used in conjunction with traditional wound care therapy, HBOT can be used to treat:

  • Diabetic leg and foot wounds
  • Chronic bone infection
  • Acute arterial insufficiency
  • Radiation related wounds
  • Necrotizing infections
  • Gas gangrene
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Crush injuries
  • Other non-healing wounds
